Majungasaurus Fossils
Majungasaurus is a genus of the abelisaurid theropod dinosaurs, which were bipedal and predominantly carnivore dinosaurs.
The Majungasaurus dinosaur was first described by a French paleontologist, Charles Depepéret, in Northwestern Madagascar in 1896.
The Majungasaurus dinosaur lived between 70 to 66 million years ago during the End of the Cretaceous period. They were the last known non-avian dinosaurs that became extinct during the Cretaceous-Paleogene period.
Majungasaurus was a medium-sized dinosaur that typically reached upto 5.6-7m (18-23ft) in length and weighed around 750-1,100 kg.
The features that differentiated the Majungasaurus from the abelisaurid dinosaurs were their wider skull, a rough-textured and thickened bone on top of its snout, and a single rounded horn on the roof of their skull.
They appeared to be most closely related to abelisaurids from India rather than from continents like South Africa, which helped paleontologists understand the biogeographical implications better.
