Albertosaurus (meaning "Alberta lizard") is a genus of tyrannosaurid theropod dinosaurs that lived in western North America during the Late Cretaceous Period, about 71 million years ago. The Albertosaurus appears similar to Tyrannosaurids of its time including its sister fossil the Gorgosaurus. Albertosaurus was a large bipedal predator but smaller than Tyrannosaurus rex and weighed between 1.7 and 2.5 metric tons. Like others of its kind, it was a bipedal predator, balancing its massive head and s-shaped neck with a long and thick tail. As in most tyrannosaurids, Albertosaurus had skull ornamentation in the form of small hornlike projections of bone on top of the head and its jaw held over 60 banana-shaped teeth.
