During the Cretaceous period, which lasted from approximately 145 to 66 million years ago, turtles were already a diverse group of reptiles that had been evolving for millions of years. Turtles are characterized by their bony shell, which acts as a protective covering for their body. Fossil evidence indicates that turtles during the Cretaceous period varied greatly in size and habitat preferences. Some species were small and terrestrial, while others were large aquatic turtles.

One notable example of a Cretaceous-age turtle is the Archelon, which was one of the largest sea turtles to have ever existed. Archelon lived during the Late Cretaceous period and inhabited the shallow seas that covered parts of North America at that time. This massive turtle had a shell that could reach up to four meters (13 feet) in length and was well-adapted for a marine lifestyle.

Another interesting Cretaceous turtle is the Protostega, which was also a giant sea turtle that lived during the Late Cretaceous period. Protostega had a shell similar in size to Archelon and likely fed on a diet of jellyfish and other soft-bodied marine organisms.
